A fun pizza night recipe, these Pizza Donuts are simple enough for kids to make and a fun party recipe everyone will love! (Plus, it’s way less messy than pizza when it comes to messy kids!)
Fried Or Baked Doughnuts
Whether we’re doing a night of crafts, or board games – or a fun themed movie night – no matter what, that time is special and reserved just for family. (I’m sure the day will change as Ella gets older – but that commitment to have a fun family night every week won’t. Spending special time together is an important family value for us.)
I tend to either theme our food around the movie or activity that we’re doing (it could be something as simple as spaghetti and meatballs for
), or use that night as opportunity to indulge and make something fun (like these spaghetti and meatball cookies for that same Lady and the Tramp movie night,
Healthy Donuts (no Eggs, No Butter, No Yeast!)
Fun twists on pizza recipes tend to be my go-to – from pull-apart pizza bread, to hot pizza dip, or even pizza pot pies. I had come up with these pizza donuts originally as a dessert recipe (coming soon) but Ella insisted that they would work as a savoury dish, too! (And my girl somehow prefers savoury treats to sweet ones – I don’t know how that happened! She definitely doesn’t get that from me…)
They were simple enough for Ella to make without help while being really fun and delicious. While they were baking, she called all of her uncles and told them about our pizza donuts invention and made false promises to save one for each of them. (I should probably be more embarrassed about the fact that I ate 5 of these in one night, but I’m not!) Luckily, these are simple enough that we could whip up a batch for her uncles in just a few minutes.
You could use pizza dough or even bagel halves to make this recipe, but I love the way that our biscuit dough puffed up and really took on the appearance of real donuts. (And if you wanted something really indulgent – like something you’d find at a country fair – you could use simple cake donuts for the base instead.) I’ve included a recipe for super quick biscuit dough below, but feel free to use pre-made biscuit dough (or pre-made pizza dough).
Ingredient Air Fryer Or Baked Donuts (no Yeast, Eggs Or Butter)
While we kept things simple with just sauce, cheese and pepperoni, feel free to use your own personal preferences for pizza toppings – or set out a variety of options so that everyone can customize their pizza donuts to their liking! This would be a great idea to set out for a pizza party or an appetizer to keep kids happy for a longer party or family get-together.
(Update: we made these the following week with a three year old friend and it was super simple for him to make, too! You just may want to help them portion out the sauce because that can get a bit messy. The kids were so proud of their pizza donuts and just kept giggling over the name.)

Tip: you can use pizza dough instead of the biscuit dough, if you prefer (or already have it on hand). Pre-made biscuit dough is a bit easier with kids and involves less clean-up.
Tip #2: I always have buttermilk in the fridge, but plain milk works perfectly as well. The real star is the pizza toppings so that simple swap doesn’t make a huge impact on the final recipe.
The butter is supposed to be cold, but I’ve always used room temperature butter and my biscuits turn out great. If you do use cold butter, use a fork or pastry cutter to cut in the butter until it forms pea-size pieces.

These Pizza Donuts are a fun recipe for a family night – or an easy party recipe that will get your guests talking! It’s easy enough for kids to make themselves, and they are delicious enough that guests will be asking for the recipe.Mention the concept of a baked doughnut to any self-professed doughnut connoisseur, chances are you'll take some heat. The idea that a baked doughnut can match up to its deep-fried brethren is laughable in some circles. I'll concede they aren't the same, but baked doughnuts can be just as delicious - delicious yet different. They get bonus points for being healthier and for not making the house smell like a greasy fry station.
I spent the better part of Sunday trying to get the dough for these yeasted baked doughnuts right. Broadly speaking, if you can make pizza dough, you can make these. The process is very similar. I looked at a broad cross-section of recipes as inspiration and tried to settle on a ratio of sugar to egg to flour to yeast and salt that would yield a tender, slightly sweet, delicious, pillowy doughnut when baked.
Crispy And Creamy Doughnuts Recipe
Many recipes call for water as the base liquid, I opted for milk. I like the softness of the milk-based rolls I've made in the past - and you can feel free to experiment with alternative milks. I baked batches at 375F, 400F, and 425F. On the higher end of the spectrum the bottoms browned too fast. I settled on 375F and a slightly longer time in the oven.
You can glaze these the way you would any other doughnut, but because I knew these were going to be at their pinnacle of taste minutes after coming out of the oven, I opted for a simple, classic, sugar dusting.
Don't over bake these, if anything, under bake them a bit - they will continue baking outside the oven for a few minutes. You want an interior that is moist and tender - not dry. Also, be sure to cut big enough holes in the center of your doughnuts - too small and they will bake entirely shut. Remember they rise, and they rise even more when they are baking. These really need to be made-to-order, but you can make and shape the dough the night before if you want to serve them for brunch. Instructions: after shaping, place doughnuts on baking sheet, cover and place in the refrigerator overnight. Pull them out an hour before baking, and let rise in a warm place before baking.Skill'it Competition Show Nitza, Naturally Easy Does It With Esty Wolbe Sunny Side Up with Naomi Nachman Living Full 'n Free with Rorie Weisberg BHIS with Yussi Weisz Shortcuts by Family Table New Leaf with Marla Rottenstreich Supper, Again? 1. Place flour in a large mixing bowl. Form a well and add yeast into well. Pour in juice and water and allow to proof for 10–15 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and mix well until a soft dough forms.
1. Heat oil in a deep pot or frying pan. To see if oil is hot enough, pinch off a small piece of dough and drop it into the pot. If the dough sizzles and rises to the surface, the oil is ready.
2. Lower heat to medium and begin frying doughnuts: pinch off walnut-sized pieces of dough and add to pot. You can use a spoon if the dough is too soft to handle. Make sure to turn the dough in the pot so that it browns evenly.
